SubAlert Is Not Taking New Customers: Other Ways Frontline Subs Can Get Job Alerts

SubAlert's home page still shows its plans and a free trial, but the sign-up page behind them now says it is not accepting new customers. So if you are a Frontline substitute looking for SubAlert today, you can't start an account. You still have options. Frontline's own website, app and phone calls cost nothing, and at least one third-party alert service is taking sign-ups: Sub Hero, which publishes this blog. Here is what SubAlert offered, what each option does in its place, and where each one stops.

What SubAlert's site says now

We checked subalert.com on September 17, 2026. The home page lists two plans, "$4.95/month For App Alerts, Desktop Alerts, & Email Alerts" and "$6.95/month For Phone Call, Text, App, Desktop, & Email Alerts," with a "21-Day Free Trial, No Credit Card Required." Its sign-up button goes to a page with no form, only a notice that SubAlert is not accepting new customers. The same notice is on its login page.

The iPhone app, SubAlert for Frontline Ed, is still listed in the App Store. Its version history shows the last update on 08/23/2019. So it is still easy to find SubAlert and get as far as the sign-up page before learning it is closed to new customers.

SubAlert's pages don't say what happens to existing accounts, or when. We only describe a service from its own site, so we don't repeat dates you may have seen elsewhere. If you have an account, ask SubAlert directly at support@subalert.com.

What you would be replacing

SubAlert's home page promises alerts "Via App, Text, Phone Call, Desktop Alert, Or Email," and says you can "Book Jobs From Your Phone, Even Without A Smartphone Or Data Plan." None of the options below covers all five of those channels. So start with the one you actually used. If SubAlert mattered to you because it called you, or because you don't carry a smartphone, your answer is different from someone who relied on its app alerts.

Option 1: Frontline's own website and app

Every Frontline substitute can use these, and they are free. Frontline's Substitute QuickStart Guide says you sign in at app.frontlineeducation.com, where available jobs appear on the homepage and under the "Available Jobs" tab, with Accept and Reject buttons beside each one. The same guide describes the free Frontline Education mobile app as giving "increased accessibility to job alerts and other job acceptance tools."

The app's own quick start guide lists what is in its menu: Jobs, to view and accept available jobs in your districts, Non-Work Days, a Calendar, a Help Center, and Settings, which include notification sounds. If you plan to rely on it, check today that your phone allows notifications from the Frontline Education app.

This fits if the jobs you want tend to stay open for a while, or if you check the board several times a day anyway. It helps to know when jobs tend to get posted. Where it stops: in the Frontline guides we read for this post, we did not find a way to limit alerts to certain schools, start times or job lengths. If that matters to you, look through the app's settings in your own account before you pay for anything.

Option 2: Frontline's phone calls

This is the free option closest to SubAlert's phone call alerts, and it works on any phone. Frontline's Substitute QuickStart Guide says: "If an available job has not been filled by another substitute two days before the absence is scheduled to start, the system will automatically begin to call substitutes and try to fill the job." It also says the system "will call about one job at a time, even if you are eligible for other jobs."

So these calls are for jobs still open two days out. They are not a way to hear about a job when it is first posted. That is how Frontline's general guide describes it. If the calls you get don't match, the contact listed under Help Resources in your Frontline account can tell you how your district has it set up.

The guide also covers calling in. Dial 1-800-942-3767, enter your ID and PIN, each followed by the # sign, and press 1 to find available jobs. When the system calls you, pressing 2 stops calls for the rest of the day, and pressing 9 stops them for good. Don't press 9 if calls are your main way of hearing about work.

Option 3: An alert service that is still taking sign-ups

Two third-party services are no longer open to a new sub. SubSidekick shut down, and SubAlert is not accepting new customers.

Sub Hero is the one we can describe in detail, because we run it. It is independent and not affiliated with Frontline Education. You connect your Frontline account and set filters on school, district, position, day, time and job length. Put that next to SubAlert's list and the gaps are plain. Alerts come by email and push only. Sub Hero does not phone you or send texts. If you don't have a smartphone, Frontline's own calls in Option 2 fit you better than we do.

There may be other services we have not covered. We only describe a service from its own current site, and we have not reviewed another one for this post. The questions below apply to any of them, including us.

Before you give any service your Frontline login

An alert service needs your Frontline login to see the jobs you are eligible for. That is worth a few questions first, which we went through in Is It Safe to Connect Your Frontline Account to a Job Alert Service? The short version:

• How is my password stored? Look for a named method, not a general promise.
• What can the service do in my account, and when?
• Can I disconnect and delete my stored login myself, without asking anyone?

Our answers: your Frontline credentials are encrypted with AWS Key Management Service. Sub Hero never posts, messages anyone, or changes anything in your Frontline profile, and on Pro it accepts only jobs that match the filters you set. You can disconnect or delete your account from Settings, which removes your stored credentials.

Which one fits you

• You don't have a smartphone, or you want a phone call: Frontline's calls, plus calling in for the full list. Know that the calls are for jobs still open two days out.
• The jobs you want stay open for hours, and you look at the board a few times a day anyway: Frontline's free app and website.
• The jobs you want are usually gone by the time you look, and you would rather not watch your phone all day: an alert service with filters. In our look at unfilled jobs, 82% of about 34,000 Frontline postings were filled more than two hours before they started.
• Some of your work comes through a system other than Frontline: our 2026 survey of alert options names a few of those separately.

What this doesn't do

• SubAlert's own pages give no date for existing accounts, so this post doesn't either.
• The Frontline steps here come from its two quick start guides as posted on September 17, 2026. Your district's setup and the current app may differ. The Help Center in the app has Frontline's current pages.
• Sub Hero can't see the non-work days you set in Frontline. Keep that in mind when you set its filters, especially on Pro. It can't win a job someone else booked first, and it does nothing outside Frontline.
• An alert from any source tells you about a job. It does not promise you will get it.

Where Sub Hero fits

If SubAlert's app or email alerts were what you relied on, Sub Hero covers that part. It watches your Frontline account, sends an email and push notification within seconds of a job matching your filters, and on Pro can accept the job for you within the rules you set, so you don't have to watch the board between classes. It does not phone you or send texts, it can't see your Frontline non-work days, and it can't get you a job someone else booked first.
