Jobulator is gone. What Frontline substitutes use for job alerts now

Jobulator was Frontline's own job alert app for substitutes, and it is gone. Frontline's help center says the app stopped being supported on July 3, 2024, and was fully decommissioned on December 31, 2024. Its website returned an error when we checked on September 21, 2026. If you searched for it because you want a push notification when a Frontline Absence Management job opens, you have three options today: the free Frontline Education mobile app, Frontline's automated phone calls, and an independent alert service that is still taking sign-ups. This post covers what Jobulator did, what Frontline says replaced it, what each option does, and what each one leaves out.

What happened to Jobulator

Jobulator was a paid app from Frontline. Its help pages describe it plainly: once a job became available to a substitute, in line with the district's settings, Jobulator sent that substitute a push notification. Subs paid a subscription for that one thing, a phone that buzzed when the board changed.

Frontline announced the end in a help center article titled Jobulator Sunset. The dates it gives are these:

• July 3, 2024. The app was no longer supported. Subscriptions could not be renewed after this, and annual subscribers who asked were eligible for a prorated refund.
• December 31, 2024. The app was fully decommissioned. Until then it kept working for subs with an active subscription.

The same help center has a Jobulator Sunset FAQs page. It says the free Frontline Mobile App offers most, if not all, of the same features, and that you should receive audible notifications for new jobs from it. If you paid for Jobulator and never got a refund, that FAQ is the page to start from, since it says who to contact.

Almost two years later, substitutes still search for Jobulator by name. That is why this page exists. The product is gone, but the need it filled is not.

Option 1: the Frontline Education mobile app

This is the replacement Frontline points to, and it is free. Frontline's quick start guide for substitutes says the app "provides increased accessibility to job alerts and other job acceptance tools." The Jobs menu is where you view and accept available jobs in your districts and see your scheduled jobs. Settings holds notification sounds. Frontline's product page says substitutes can "get notifications of available jobs sent right to their device," and its blog says a sub can "get a notification immediately when a job is available" and then filter the list by school name, job date, or post date.

Read that last sentence carefully. The filtering Frontline describes applies to the list of jobs once you open it. The pages we read do not describe filtering the notification itself, so if your district posts a lot of jobs you will hear about all of them. For many subs that is fine. If your district posts steadily and you take most of what comes, the free app is enough, and you should not pay anyone.

Two more things Frontline's pages do not settle. Which jobs are visible to you depends on your district's settings, so check the app's Settings and your district before assuming notifications are on. And because we do not measure the Frontline app, we cannot tell you how quickly its notification lands after a job posts. We can only tell you how quickly jobs go, which is the next section.

Why the alert matters at all

Jobulator's whole job was speed, and the board has not slowed down. In our look at about 5,600 Frontline postings across 82 districts, about a third were gone within a minute and roughly two thirds within two minutes. The jobs that last are mostly the ones nobody wants, and the jobs people want are the ones that vanish. A notification that reaches you while the job is still open is the difference between booking it and reading about it.

That is also why an unfiltered notification wears thin. If most of what buzzes is a job you would decline, you stop looking, and then you miss the one you wanted.

Option 2: Frontline's phone calls

Frontline can call you about open jobs, and no app is needed. We covered how the calls work in our post on SubAlert closing to new customers. The short version, from the Frontline documentation quoted there: the calls begin for jobs still unfilled two days before the absence starts. They are a backstop for jobs nobody has taken, not a way to hear about a job the minute it posts.

Option 3: an independent alert service

Jobulator was not the only alert app that closed. Two independent services went with it, and each said so on its own site:

• SubSidekick's site said it had shut down, which we wrote about in August. On September 21, 2026, the site did not respond at all.
• SubAlert's homepage still lists plans at $4.95 and $6.95 a month, but its signup page says it is not accepting new customers. We wrote about that in September.

Sub Hero is still open. It is independent and not affiliated with Frontline Education, and here is what it does. You connect your Frontline login and set filters: school, district, position, day of the week, start and end time, and how long the job is. When a job matching those filters appears, you get an email and a push notification within seconds of it matching, with a button to book it. On the Pro plan, auto-accept can book a matching job for you, with five auto-accepts included each month.

The difference from Jobulator is the filter. Frontline's page describes Jobulator's notification as going out once a job became available to you. Sub Hero's alert goes out when a job matches rules you set, and only then. The tradeoff is that you have to set the filters, and a job outside them goes by without a sound.

Standard is $6.99 a month and Pro is $9.99 a month. Pro comes with a 14-day trial, one per Frontline login. A free account needs no card. It shows the open jobs for your Frontline login in the app but does not send alerts. Before you hand any service your Frontline login, including ours, we wrote down the questions worth asking.

Which one fits you

• You take most jobs your district posts, and the board is not a race. The Frontline app, free.
• You do not carry a smartphone, or you want a call. Frontline's phone calls, free, with their two-day timing.
• The jobs you want are gone before you see them, and you do not want to watch the app all day. An alert service with filters.
• You want a job booked while you sleep. Pro auto-accept, with its five-a-month limit and your filters doing the choosing.

What we can't tell you

• Whether your old Jobulator subscription was refunded. Frontline's FAQ covers refunds. Ask Frontline, not us.
• How fast the Frontline app's notification arrives. We do not measure it.
• How your district has set up notifications, or which jobs it makes visible to you. Only your district can say.
• Why Frontline made the decision. We know what its own article says and nothing more.
