Rejecting a job on Frontline: what the Reject button does, whether the teacher sees it, and who to ask first

Published: November 2, 2026

Frontline's own Substitute Help Guide answers half of this. On your side, "Rejecting a job will make it disappear from your available jobs and you will not see it again." The guide does not say whether the teacher, the school or the district's substitute office is told, and we found no Frontline page for substitutes or for teachers that says either way. Your district's substitute coordinator, or whoever runs Frontline for the district, can tell you how yours is set up. Ask before you reject a job you might want back.

We read every page cited here on November 2, 2026. Districts set Frontline up their own way, so this is what Frontline's published help says, not a rule for your district. If a staffing agency employs you, the agency is the one to ask.

What Frontline's help guide says about the Reject button

The Finding Jobs page of Frontline's Substitute Help Guide covers the list of jobs "that you are qualified and available to fill." A job in that list has a Reject button on the right side of the listing. On rejecting, the page says two things:

That is all it says. The page offers no undo. It does not mention the teacher, the school or an administrator being notified. Its wording is about your own list of available jobs and nothing else.

The guide is an older one. Its first page still calls the system Aesop, the name Frontline Absence Management used to go by. Frontline's newer help center pages would not load for us, so we cannot say whether they word this differently.

Does the teacher see it?

Nothing we read says so. Frontline's employee help guide, the one written for teachers, covers creating absences, leaving notes for the sub, and choosing favorite and excluded substitutes. Its page on preferred substitutes says favorite subs "will be notified instantly by email when you create an absence that needs a sub." It says nothing about the teacher hearing back when a substitute rejects the job.

That is not the same as saying nobody at the school can tell. One charter school operator's orientation page for its own substitutes asks them to click reject on a job they will not work, "so your registrar knows if they will need to personally contact other substitutes to fill that day." That reads as though the person who fills jobs at those schools can see rejections in some form. The page does not say how, and it does not say the teacher sees them. It describes that operator's schools, not Frontline everywhere.

Frontline's own answer to questions like this is to send you to your district. Its Popular Questions for Substitutes page, in a copy saved December 6, 2024, says your district's Frontline administrator "will be familiar with both account and district policies." It also tells subs to contact their district or staffing agency directly for "any questions about policies and procedures, specific absences, or troubleshooting."

Rejecting is not canceling

Rejecting is for a job you never accepted. Canceling is for a job you already booked, and the district decides how that works. Frontline's Popular Questions page says: "Each district dictates its job cancellation policy, and these system settings determine whether you can or cannot cancel a job." When a Cancel button is allowed, it sits to the far right of the job on your Scheduled Jobs tab. When it is not there, the page tells you to reach out to your system administrator.

The two mistakes leave you in different places. A job you rejected by mistake is gone from your list, and whether anyone can get it back for you is a question for the district. A job you accepted by mistake may or may not be one you can cancel online. If a teacher contacts you directly and you need to say no, our older post on declining jobs covers how to word it.

If what you want is fewer multi-day jobs on your list

Frontline's guide says "Some absences in your available jobs list may be multi day absences." They carry their own icon. For these jobs, "instead of seeing an Accept button you will see a See Details button." See Details opens the job day by day, and "To accept the job click the Accept Multi-day button."

So on the website, as the guide describes it, a multi-day job has no plain Accept button in the list. You open it first and accept it with a separate button. We could not check whether the Frontline mobile app works the same way.

We found no setting in Frontline's substitute help that hides jobs by length. The two settings the Popular Questions page describes for shaping your list are your Schools list, where "You can define which locations you want to see jobs for and those you want to avoid," and non-work days, which "indicate when you are not available to work as a sub." Neither one filters out long jobs. Rejecting each multi-day job does take it off your list, for good. A long job you would have taken later, once your calendar changed, goes with it.

What to ask your sub coordinator before you reject

Frontline's Popular Questions page says you can find your organization's contact details through the "Help Resources icon in the top right corner of the application." These are the questions worth asking:

A rejection hides one job. It is not an excluded list, where a teacher or a school keeps you from seeing their jobs at all. If a whole school has gone quiet for you, our post on Frontline's excluded substitutes lists covers that.

What we can't tell you

Where Sub Hero fits

Sub Hero is independent and not affiliated with Frontline Education. Its filters decide which jobs send you an alert, on school, district, position, day, time and length. A filter does not reject, hide or remove anything in Frontline. A job your filters skip is still on your Frontline list, and our FAQ says Sub Hero "never posts, messages anyone, or changes anything in your Frontline profile." It cannot see your non-work days, it cannot win a job someone booked first, and it does nothing outside Frontline. Filters change which jobs you hear about. What Frontline shows you, and who sees a rejection, is a question for your district.
